Here’s Why You Should Sleep On Your Left Side (Backed by Science)

On what side of your body do you usually sleep? Do you have difficulties with deciding which position would be best for you to sleep in?

Many people know the answer of these questions, while for others the doubt seeps back each time they have trouble to fall asleep.

There are few decisions: are you going to feel more rested on your back or lying on your stomach is better?

According to experts, the best side to sleep on is the left side.

In this article you can read the explanation of Dr. John Douillard about how sleeping on our left side may be the ideal way to give your body the rest it needs. There are several reasons why the left side is the best when it comes to sleeping.

Spine and breathing

According to Joint Essential, when you sleep on your back you actually put too much pressure on the upper back and hips and that leaves the lower back in a suspended state which is very dangerous in the long run. In addition to that, sleeping on the stomach strains both the lower back and the neck. As WebMD explains, sleeping on the side is the best at providing optimal air flow to your lungs.

On LifeSpa, Dr.Douillard wrote that if you sleep on your left side, the food will travel more swiftly, starting from the small intestine up to the large intestine, and finally in the descending colon. After eating, it is advisable to take 10-minute rests by lying on the left side, as on that way you help your meal to be better digested and to recover from the dreaded “food coma” quicker.

Lymph draining

Dr. Douillard explains that most of the lymphatic system is present on the left side of human body. In case when lymphatic congestion happens, in most cases it is on the left-hand side. Therefore, by sleeping on the left side you allow the gravity to take some of the pressure of lymph drainage away from your heart and your spleen. Moreover, as a matter of fact, the heart and the spleen are located on the left side of your body.

Dr. Steven Park is sleep professional and he explains that if you are trying to forcefully alter the position you sleep that could make the things even worse as on that way you will disrupt your sleeping habits.
