Defecation is final act of process of digestion of the food, during which the waste material from the digestive tract is removed from the organism.
When there is any change in your bowel movement, it may be a consequence of changes in your diet, but you should be aware of the fact that it may be symptom of some severe health issue.
Human stool is around 75% water and the rest is a combination of fiber, dead and living bacteria, different cells and mucus. At most people, normal poop is smooth and soft, elongated and whole. The texture should be uniform and the poop should be S-shaped. Healthy poop has medium to light brown color.
Let’s take a look at what other types of poop mean:
Small and hard lumpy poop – this type of poop may be indication of acute inflammation of the small intestine. It is usually small, abrasive and solid, and usually has diameter of 1-2 centimeters. People who have been taking antibiotics have this type of stool and it often causes anal bleeding.
Sausage shaped poop with lumps – people who have this type of stool have difficulties as it quite painful until it passes and often causes anal bleeding. This type of stool is common among patients who are suffering from IBS and the diameter is between 3-5 centimeters.
Sausage shaped stool with cracked surface – this type of poop is quite similar to the previous one. The difference is that this type is digested much faster.
Sausage-shaped poop, smooth, and soft – this type of poop is considered as normal and it is very common among people who defecate once a day.
Soft blobs of stool with defined edges – people who defecate more than once a day after major meals have this type of poop.
Fluffy poop with ragged and torn edges – this stool has a soft texture and may be indication of high blood pressure and stress.
Diarrhea type of stool – this type poop is very similar to ordinary diarrhea but still, there is difference – it happens in conjunction with constipation. Depending on the odor and color of the poop, it may be indication of certain medical condition or ailment.
Black or bright red stool – at most patients this type poop is symptom of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.
Pale brown or white stool – this type of poop may be indication of hepatitis, cirrhosis or pancreatic disease.
Yellow-colored poop – patients with gallbladder issues have yellow poop.
Unpleasant smell of poop may be indication of:
- Problems with digestion and absorption
- Celiac disease
- Cystic fibrosis
